'Most staff' return to work at Lonmin Platinum 29th August 2007

Lonmin Platinum has announced that the "substantial majority" of its workforce at its Marikiana mining operations has resumed work after a strike was called on August 19th.

The firm added that it is continuing negotiations with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) to "to resolve the issues underlying the situation".

Workers had pursued industrial action in response to plans to introduce an SAP payroll system and glitches in this which are perceived to hamper its effectiveness.

However, as a result of what Lonmin described as an "unlawful and unprotected strike action", annual output is likely to down between 25,000 and 30,000 oz, according to a statement from the firm.

Earlier this week, Lonmin, which is the third largest platinum producer worldwide, told striking workers that they must return to work by an appointed date or be dismissed.
