$1.6m platinum and diamond handbag stars at fashion show 28th June 2007

Fashionistas at a recent Tokyo fashion show were wowed with a diamond studded platinum handbag from Japanese jewellery chain, Ginza Tanaka.

Incorporating 2,182 diamonds, totalling 208 carats, and fashioned from pure platinum, the bag retails at a staggering $1.63 million. Attendees of the event were stunned by the piece which embodies the elegant, understated glamour of platinum.

The company has used platinum in a number of headline-grabbing high-end pieces in which everyday objects are transformed into objets d'art, including a toy robot in the popular Gundam range, which was shaped from 1,400 grams of platinum, and a limited-edition Hello Kitty figure.

Founded in 1892, the company operates a chain of retail shops across Japan, its flagship branch being a three-floor store in Tokyo's famous Ginza district.
