Johnson Matthey SCRT Technology proves worth in stationary applications

Johnson Matthey's SCRT® Technology, a combination Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and continuously regenerating diesel particulate filter (DPF), has already shown its worth in vehicles and is now proving its value in stationary engines. The company was the first to develop and patent CRT® [continuously regenerating technology], which uses a platinum group metal catalyst to regenerate the DPF.

Platinum-iron alloy holds key to next generation hard drives

An alloy of iron and platinum with an ordered crystal structure could be the key to unlock a next generation of hard drives in computing. Previous methods for making the alloys involved high-temperature treatments that would be difficult to integrate into the rest of the manufacturing process, according to professor Kai Liu of the University of California, Davis.

Lonmin recognises AMCU at Marikana platinum mine

World number three platinum producer Lonmin is formally recognising the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) as the majority union at its Marikana operation in South Africa. The news came as the miner said employees engaged in an illegal strike at the facility had returned to work. The unprotected action was the result of union rivalry, the cause of much of the labour trouble across the platinum mining sector in 2012.

South African wage demands spiral as platinum sector braces for unrest

South Africa's National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has called for wage hikes of up to 60 per cent, helping to send the rand to a four-year low as investors brace for unrest in the industry. The union's demands, which were submitted to the Chamber of Mines, raised speculation that the sector could be headed for more walkouts and strikes.

US DoE awards Jeff Serfass for hydrogen fuel cell leadership

The US Department of Energy (DoE) Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Program has honoured Technology Transition Corporation boss Jeff Serfass for his work in the field. He was handed the Special Recognition Award for his "outstanding leadership, commitment and collaboration in developing a unified industry stakeholder association, and for contributions to the DoE's Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Program", reports Fuel Cell Today.

Boston Scientific begins platinum stent trial

The first patient in a new major clinical trial for a platinum stent system has been enrolled, according to Boston Scientific. With a further 293 patients to be involved, the study will evaluate the company’s WallFlex Biliary RX Stent, a self-expanding metal stent (SEMS), as a bridge to surgery compared with the absence of drainage prior to surgery.

Oorja Protonics inks South Africa direct methanol fuel cell deal

Oorja Protonics has agreed a deal to commercialise its direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) system for the telecoms market in South Africa. The company has signed a memorandum of understanding with Powertech System Integrators (PTSI) and HySA/Catalysis to develop the technology in the platinum-rich nation.

Eastern Platinum production falls on mine wind down

Production at South Africa-focused miner Eastern Platinum (Eastplats) fell by more than half at the start of the year as the company winds down operations. The Canadian firm said in April it would suspend development funding at its only operating mine in South Africa, the Crocodile River Mine (CRM), as part of efforts to preserve value while the outlook for platinum group metals (pgms) remains negative.

Ivanplats expands resources at Flatreef platinum discovery

Canadian mining developer Ivanplats has significantly expanded and upgraded the mineral resources at the Flatreef Discovery on its Platreef platinum, palladium, gold and rhodium (4E) property in South Africa. Announcing its first quarter results, the company said it received a new technical report in March confirming a major expansion and upgrade of the previously declared underground mineral resources for the Flatreef Deposit.
