The Sex and the City ladies shined in several platinum pieces by Fred Leighton at the New York premiere of their film. Kristin Davis, who plays Charlotte, wore a platinum bracelet, along with drop earrings and a platinum 24-carat diamond ring. Cynthia Nixon, who stars as Miranda, chose a pair of 12-carat diamond earrings, a platinum ring and a platinum and diamond bracelet.

Meanwhile, US couples are reported to be spending less on their weddings and honeymoons with some items costing thousands of dollars. According to The Wedding Report, the average cost of a wedding will drop to $28,704. The surging cost of platinum is also costing more on wedding essentials such as rings.

A competition was announced to promote and develop jewellery brands from a major manufacturing region in China. The Shenzhen region is holding the event which will promote the spirit of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Named "the Beauty of Athletics" the competition will see top-end jewellers compete to showcase their designs. Platinum has been announced as an acceptable material for the design along with platinum and gold combinations.

A new world record price for a carat gemstone was set in Sotheby's as a pear-shaped blue diamond, set in platinum, sold for $4.93 million. Weighing 3.73 carats, the piece was designed by British jeweller Laurence Graff. Other lots at the auction included 62 jewels from the collection of Lily Marinho, the widow of Brazilian media mogul Roberto Marinho.

Bow Street jewellers Midas made the platinum wedding ring commissioned by Autumn Kelly for her new husband Peter Phillips. Reports from Lisburn Today revealed that the couple viewed a section of wedding bands before choosing their design. The five millimetre platinum court wedding ring was made from scratch by the jewellers and it was ready within a week. Jim Conlon, owner of the shop, said it "was an honour" to have worked on the piece with the couple.

The Women's Jewelry Association announced the winners of its annual DIVA Awards. Platinum Guild International sponsored the competition which was themed around 'The Platinum Wedding' and featured five categories. The winner in the Everyday Bridal Ring Trio Suite category, under $5,000 retail, was called 'Delicate Leaf'. It was designed by Lisa Krikawa and features diamonds set in a platinum ring.

Shoppers in Europe and Asia boosted Tiffany's first quarter results, the jeweller revealed. First quarter net earnings rose by 19 per cent to $64.4 million from $54.1 million. In addition, worldwide sales jumped by 12.2 per cent to $688.1 million. Michael Kowalski, chairman of the firm, said that the Asian markets and European market had compensated for the "softness" in US sales.

London Jewellery Week was full of top designers this month. Theo Fennell, Stephen Webster and Shaun Leane were just a selection of talented designers on show according to Reuters. Platinum pieces were on show, as well as gold, diamond and other precious metal pieces. Artist Tracey Emin said that the event brought the "very best" of London together.

An Australian jeweller has unveiled what he claims are the "most expensive champagne glasses" in the world. Encrusted with white and pink diamonds, the glasses were also finished with platinum and 18 carat white and rose gold. The glasses were commissioned by a client of the designer John Calleija.

Three unique jewels will be show at Jovella 2008. They have been especially created to celebrate Israel's 60th anniversary and feature pressure stones as well as platinum. The 'State of Israel Ring' depicts Israel's independence and features 48 emeralds and a black diamond set in a platinum band.
