Eastern Platinum will purchase four diesel power generators capable of producing over 23 megawatts of energy meaning it can continue with the development of the Crocodile River mine.
"With our planned project development schedule and the uncertainty surrounding the power supply situation in South Africa, we felt it prudent to ensure a large degree of self sufficiency and the purchase and commissioning of these power units will achieve this," said Ian Rozier, the firm's Chief Executive.
The generators can run on diesel fuel or heavy fuel oil which is cheaper than standard diesel and each one has seen no more than 1,100 hours of service.
Meanwhile, Eastern Platinum also announced that its first-quarter production from the Crocodile River Mine increased by 4.5 per cent to 27,825 oz.
These figures were reached in spite of the power crisis that has affected platinum mines since January and Mr Rozier believes the firm is beginning to see the results of development.
"Substantial progress continues to be made at CRM and we are beginning to see the results of the extensive on and off reef development during the last year which is integral to the ongoing production build-up at the mine," he explained.
