Forklifts use hydrogen fuel cells containing platinum 1st April 2008
Plug Power has announced that forklift trucks being used by Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire are now using hydrogen fuel cells that contain platinum instead of lead-acid batteries.
About 22 forklifts will be converted to the GenDrive system this year and Plant Manager Mike Rose said he was "very excited" about the new initiative.
"The fuel cells are a direct replacement that last longer than batteries, take less time to change or refuel and only emit water vapour. This is certainly a step in the right direction as we work continually to minimize our impact on our environment," he said.
The new order represents Bridgestone's fifth order for GenDrive power unites in under two years.
"The Bridgestone Aiken County plant continues to demonstrate industry leadership and environmental stewardship while achieving productivity gains through the implementation of the GenDrive fuel cell solution," said Chris Reid, Vice President of Motive Power Division, Plug Power.
According to Bridgestone, the fuel cells are a positive investment and are a "viable alternative" to traditional vehicles.
