Cook County vehicles to get diesel oxidation catalysts 27th March 2008

The Department of Environmental Control in the Cook County of Illinois has been awarded $103,297 for a project that fits vehicles with diesel oxidation catalysts and diesel particulate filters.

Funding has been provided by the Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 and will fit at least 26 vehicles with diesel oxidation catalysts and four vehicles with diesel particulate filters in an attempt to cut diesel emissions.

Regional Administrator Mary Gade, said: "EPA is working with Cook County to upgrade its vehicles and to increase public awareness of problems caused by diesel emissions. Reducing these emissions will help us all breathe cleaner air and live healthier lives."

The money will be provided as part of the Midwest Clean Diesel Initiative, a programme aimed at reducing diesel emissions in the Midwest.

The county will also seek a partner to increase public awareness of the issues surrounding vehicle emissions.
