New coil procedure proving effective 12th January 2006
Use of a new type of platinum coil in the treatment of aneurysms is becoming increasingly popular in the US.
The HydroCoil, which is similar to the normal platinum coils used in the procedure, but includes a gel coating, is having an improved effect on patients and doctors are becoming increasingly impressed by it.
Coils are fed through an artery to seal an aneurysm to prevent it from bursting, but due to their relatively low packing density the coils can become compacted, thereby enabling a treated aneurysm to grow back again.
However, the HydroCoil appears to have defeated that problem, because it absorbs fluid and is able to expand to fill three times the space of standard coils, making it a more effective and long-lasting treatment.
The HydroCoil is currently being tested at around 20 locations across the US and it has attracted glowing reports from many of the doctors who have used it, as they believe it could reduce the risk of an aneurysm returning and save patients from needing more treatment in the future.
