UK Platinum Jewellery Figures 2002 2nd June 2003

2002 platinum jewellery hallmarking in the UK up more than 40%

Statistics released by the Assay Offices of Great Britain show that in 2002 platinum outperformed any other jewellery material. The weight of pieces sent for hallmarking increased year on year by almost 43% - a remarkable performance considering figures for jewellery were generally down amid retail comments of a softening in consumer demand. The figures also showed that the weight of platinum articles is increasing – on average 8.06 g per item in 2002.

Until recently platinum’s niche in the UK market has been in bridal - the metal of choice for an increasing number of couples for their wedding and engagement rings. But now these couples are becoming platinum devotees and buying platinum jewellery for anniversaries, birthdays, Christmas, Valentines Day, or even just for fun.
