Other platinum applications

Platinum group metals have a wide variety of miscellaneous uses. Many of these exploit the unique properties of the metals to provide environmental and efficiency advantages. Examples include the use of platinum and palladium catalysts to control pollution from non-road engines and stationary sources; using platinum to catalytically generate heat from propane without burning the fuel; use of platinum and iridium electrodes to extend the the operating life of automotive and aviation spark plugs; coating turbine blades with platinum to increase their longevity in the harsh operating environment of a gas turbine (jet) engine; and platinum-clad anodes for the cathodic protection of nautical vessels.
